‘Bat Wings’ (Crispy Blackened Chicken Wings for Halloween!)

A large platter of homemade, spicy, and dark "Bat Wings" being served at a fun and casual Halloween party.

A simple recipe for spicy, crispy baked chicken wings with a spooky ‘Bat Wings’ theme, perfect for Halloween. The chicken wings get their dark, ‘bat-like’ color from a coating of blackening seasoning and olive oil. They are baked in a hot oven until crispy and cooked through. The hot wings are then tossed in a classic, simple wing sauce made from melted butter and hot sauce, and served with blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken wings
  • 2 tbsp blackening seasoning
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • Blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the chicken wings with the olive oil and blackening seasoning until they are evenly coated.
  3. Arrange the wings in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wings are crispy and cooked through.
  5. While the wings are baking, mix together the hot sauce and melted butter in a small bowl.
  6. Once the wings are cooked, transfer them to a large bowl and toss them in the hot sauce mixture until fully coated.
  7. Serve immediately with blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping.

Notes

  • The ‘bat wing’ appearance comes from the dark color of the blackening seasoning, making this a great themed appetizer for Halloween.
  • Baking the wings at a high temperature on a baking sheet is an easier, less messy alternative to deep-frying.
  • Tossing the hot, crispy wings in the sauce right after they come out of the oven helps the sauce adhere well.
