The Best 5-Ingredient Easy Blueberry Cobbler

A close-up of a warm bowl of Easy Blueberry Cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting on top.

An easy and classic blueberry cobbler with a simple, cake-like batter. The recipe features a unique method where butter is first melted in the baking dish in the oven. A batter made from self-rising flour, sugar, and milk is then poured over the hot butter, and fresh blueberries are scattered on top. As it bakes, the batter rises up and around the berries to create a golden, tender crust over a bubbly fruit layer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the butter in an 8-inch square baking dish and put it in the preheating oven to melt, which should take about 5 minutes.
  3. Once the butter is melted, remove the baking dish from the oven.
  4. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, mix together the self-rising flour, sugar, and milk until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter directly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
  6. Scatter the fresh blueberries evenly over the top of the batter.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until the topping is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • This recipe uses self-rising flour, which already contains a leavening agent and salt.
  • The method of pouring the batter over the melted butter without stirring is key to the texture of the crust.
  • The batter will rise up and around the blueberries as it bakes.
  • This cobbler is excellent served warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
