The Ultimate Fireworks Blondies: Your Perfect 4th of July Dessert

A hand holding a festive Fireworks Blondie at a 4th of July party.

A festive and chewy dessert bar, these ‘Fireworks Blondies’ have a rich brown sugar base and are packed with red, white, and blue M&M’s and patriotic sprinkles. The simple batter is mixed together, pressed into a pan, and baked until just golden, resulting in a dense and delicious treat perfect for patriotic holidays.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups (400g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups (248g) all purpose flour
  • 2 cups red, white, and blue M&Ms
  • ½ cup patriotic sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with foil, allowing some to hang over the sides, and spray well with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, using a stand or hand mixer, mix the butter and brown sugar until crumbly.
  3. Mix in the eggs and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Mix in the salt and baking powder.
  5. Gradually mix in the flour until just combined.
  6. Stir in the M&Ms and sprinkles by hand.
  7. Spread the dough into the prepared pan. Since the mixture is sticky, it’s helpful to spray your hands with cooking spray to press and smooth the dough into an even layer.
  8. Top with extra M&Ms if desired for a more decorated appearance.
  9. Bake for about 22-25 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden. It’s better to slightly underbake them, as they will finish setting as they cool.
  10. Let the blondies cool completely in the pan before lifting out with the foil and cutting into bars.

Notes

  • Lining the pan with foil and spraying it well allows for easy removal and cleanup.
  • The dough is very sticky; spraying your hands with nonstick cooking spray makes it much easier to press into the pan.
  • Be careful not to overbake. The blondies will continue to set as they cool, and underbaking slightly ensures a chewy texture.
