Hot Dog Mummies (The Perfect Halloween Treat!)

A large platter of homemade, spooky "Hot Dog Mummies" being served at a fun and casual Halloween party.

An easy and festive recipe for ‘Hot Dog Mummies,’ a perfect kid-friendly meal for Halloween. This simple dish uses refrigerated crescent roll dough as a convenient shortcut. The dough is cut into thin strips which are then wrapped around bun-length hot dogs to resemble mummy bandages, leaving a small space for the face. After being baked until golden brown, the ‘mummies’ are decorated with eyes made from small rounds of American cheese, with ketchup or mustard for the pupils.

Ingredients

  • One 8-ounce tube refrigerated crescent dough
  • 8 bun-length hot dogs
  • 1 slice white American cheese
  • Ketchup and/or mustard, for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the crescent dough onto a work surface and press the seams together to create a single rectangle.
  3. Cut the dough lengthwise into 8 long, thin strips.
  4. Take one hot dog and one strip of dough. Wind the dough around the hot dog, stretching it slightly as you go, to look like mummy wrappings. Leave a small gap of exposed hot dog near one end for the ‘eyes.’
  5. Place the wrapped hot dog on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough and hot dogs.
  6. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the dough is golden brown.
  7. While the hot dogs are baking, use the narrow end of a piping tip or a small straw to punch out 16 small rounds from the slice of cheese for the mummies’ eyes.
  8. Remove the hot dogs from the oven. Use a toothpick to place a small dab of ketchup on the back of each cheese round and ‘glue’ two eyes onto each mummy in the open space.
  9. Use the toothpick again to put a tiny dot of ketchup or mustard in the center of each cheese round to create a pupil.
