Ingredients
Scale
1 pound lean ground beef
2 tablespoons butter
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 small green bell pepper, diced
8 ounces brown mushrooms, minced
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon Kosher salt
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup beef broth
8 ounces provolone cheese slices, chopped (use 6 oz for a less cheesy version)
6 brioche hamburger buns
Instructions
Brown the Beef: Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it develops a deep brown crust on the bottom before breaking it apart. Continue cooking until about 50% of the beef has a rich crust.
Sauté the Vegetables: Remove the beef from the skillet and add the butter, diced onions, bell peppers, and minced mushrooms. Allow the vegetables to brown for 1-2 minutes without stirring, then stir and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
Make the Sauce: Return the beef to the skillet. In a small cup, whisk together the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet along with the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Simmer: Let the mixture cook until it thickens and becomes slightly less liquidy, about 3-5 minutes.
Melt the Cheese: Turn off the heat and stir in the chopped provolone cheese until melted and gooey.
Serve: Serve the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe mixture piled high on toasted brioche buns.
